Governor Kean initiated the Teacher Recognition Program to recognize the State's "many fine teachers." Mr. Sherburne, English Department Chairman, has been a faculty member the past 19 years. Through the years, Mr. Sherburne has been active directing many school dramatic productions along with involvement with the National Honor Society.

His teaching assignments have included all grade levels of English, including Independent Study, Drama, Honors and Humanities. As the high school award recipient, Mr. Sherburne will attend the Governor's Convocation on Excellence in Teaching this spring. At this gathering, he will be presented with a certificate of commendation. The State will also forward $1,000 to the school district to be used for an educational purpose designated bv Mr.

Sherburne. 1 '-V': Brown Teacher, Coach Receives Mr. Richard Rampoha, a teacher at F.N. Brown Elementary School in Verona, has been chosen as an "Outstandinog Teacher" in the Governor's Teacher Recognition Program. He has been teaching in Verona for 11 years.

He is also well-known at the high school for his coaching of the Junior Varsity Girls' Soccer Team, which he has been doing for the past seven seasons. A graduate of William Paterson College with a B.A. in Elementary education, Mr. Rampolla has also attended Fairleigh Dickinson University. He lives in Verona with his wife, Barbara.

HEART BEAT. H.B. Whitehorne students in Verona recently held a Jump for Heart program to raise money for the American Heart Association. The Middle School students were very successful in their attempt, raising $5,915.45 the highest total in both the county and state for a single school. The Verona Student Council will be sponsoring its second annual Lip- Sync Contest tomorrow at 7 p.m., at the V.H.S. auditorium.

Tickets for this year's contest will be $2 for students and $3 for adults. Tickets are on sale now. "Lip-Sync acts can include rock stars past and present, and students, faculty and anyone interested are invited to participate," said a spokesman from the student council. Cash prizes will be awarded. Achieve 'A' List Sanders and Tahira Tamboki.

Seniors, with graduation only a few weeks away, are still working hard. These seniors had all A's: William Caruso, Marisa Mariniello, and Eric Solomon. Mr. Pirrello held a brief congratulatory ceremony in his office and gave each student a VHS mug as a prize for their achievement. "It's not easy," he said.

"Spring is here and the work is getting harder as the year progresses. You can be truly proud of your honor." I F.N. Brown School F. N. Brown School in Verona will be holding Back-To-School-Night tonight from 7:30 p.m.

until 9 p.m. Some of the special attractions for the evening will be an art show, a gym class demonstration and a book fair. Kindergarten, firs' and second grade classrooms will be open from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. All special classrooms will also be open at this time: art, Music Chapter 1, basic skills lab, speech, Oralographics, library and nurse's office. Third, fourth and fifth grade parents will see a gym class demon- stration which will be conducted with the following schedule: fourth p.m., third grade--8-20 p.m.

and fifth Classrooms will be open between p.m. except for the time when the children are in the gym demonstration. "Please take the time to visit all of your child's classrooms and view the displayed art said a school spokesman. The School and Community Association sponsored book fair will be set-up in the cafeteria. Students will have had the opportunity to look over the selections during school.

Volunteers will be present to assist parents with any purchases. North End Press Club N.J. Transit Program Each year children are seriously injured or lose their lives needlessly while treaspassing on railroad property. To help prevent such tragedies, N.J. Transit provides a railroad safety program to elementary Recently, this program was presented to all students at North End School in Cedar Grove by Commuter Relations Speicalist Donna Schiereck.

The program consisted of a general introduction to safety and a film illustrating these problems. The film was followed by a question and discussion period with the N.J. Transit representative. At the close of the presentation the children were given achievement awards for participating in the program along with other safety materials. Egg Hunt North End School celebrated the coming of Easter with its traditional Easter egg hunt.

This special activity is sponsored by the Student Council for classes from Kindergarten to second grade. Everyone enjoyed the activity and while they had fun, they raised money for a good cause too.

Mary Lynn Murphy Grade 8 STOCK MARKET CLUB The Stock Market Club, under the guidance of H.B. Whitehorne teacher Thomas Morris, is a very popular activity at Whitehorne.

The 25 members meet weekly at 7:30 a.m. The club teacches about the workings of buying and selling stocks. This year Mr. Morris is holding the First Annual Mutual Fund Contest. Each member received (an imaginary!) $10,000 to invest in a mutual fund.

This really makes investing come alive! Each person is permitted a maximum of ten buys and sells from January to June. At present Mark Zjawinski has turned his $10,000 into $12,000 by investing his money in 20th Century Growth Fund. We will be taking a trip to The New York Stock Exchange in the near future. Lunch will be at the South Street Seaport. Mark Zjawinski Grade 8 CLASS TRIP On Thursday, April 9, the seventh graders of H.B.

Whitehorne attended a performance at Felician College in Lodi presented by the Chamber Repertory Theater. The field trip was sponsored by the Student Council. The Chamber Repertory Theater has been performing a nation-wide tour for over a decade. This season the C.R.T. brought us, "Encore" is a special production especially for students which introduces them to classic drama, language arts, and literature through live performance.

The only other place in New Jersey where the 5-member troupe will perform again this season is Trenton, the capitol. Included in the presentation are five terrific stories by O. Henry, Edgar Allen Poe, Washington Irving, Guy de Maupassant, and Mark Twain. Stories include: "The Tell Tale Heart," "The Ransom of Red Chief," "Rip Van Winkle," "The Necklace," and "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." Following the perforrruuice, the seventh graders ate lunch in the college cafeteria with the other school groups on the outing. Occhino Grade 7 H.B.

Whitehorne School News JUMP FOR HEART PROGRAM On April 10, H.B. Whitehorne Middle School in Verona took part in a Jump for the Heart program, which was sponsored by the Ameri-! can Heart Association. The event v. is 1 i' was held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Altogether, 160 students participated in the event, which made 27 teams, with at maximum six people per team. Each person jumped at least two minutes and then switched with a team mate. Gail Tynan recently visited Carolyn Badagliacca's third grade class. She presented a lesson on thumb printing. The children learned how to make animals from thumb prints.

After the lesson, each child chose his favorite print and wrote a story about it. They then typed their stories into a computer, got a printout, and displayed them on a bulletin board in the classroom. One of the most exciting events recently for him has been his training at the New Jersey Academy for the Advancement of Teaching and Management. This program, now in its developmental stages in Verona, seeks to improve classroom teaching through a cooperative approach among the teachers themselves.
